The Shelbourne, Irish Constitution Centenary

One hundred years ago, in a private room at The Shelbourne, Irish history changed forever.

The hotel has hosted many important meetings over the course of two centuries but this one was different. In what was then known simply as Room 112, under the chairmanship of Michael Collins, the committee met to draft the Constitution of the Irish Free State. A gathering of solemn, passionate patriots sat around the great oak table. For hours and days, weeks, and months, they dreamed and debated the future of their newborn nation. It was only the beginning of a very long process, but it was a moment of undeniable optimism, hope and courage.

Today that same room is known as the Constitution Suite. That same table and those same chairs still remain. They stand in tribute to this crucial passage in Ireland's story, and The Shelbourne is deeply proud to honour the memory of that unforgettable event.
